Wanting and Desiring

Learn to express wants and desires using 〜たい form and ほしい.

Expressing "Want to Do": 〜たい

To express that you want to do something, attach to the verb stem (masu-form without ます).

Examples
Nihon e ikitai desu. I want to go to Japan.
Eiga o mitai desu. I want to watch a movie.
Nani o tabetai desu ka. What do you want to eat?
Important

The 〜たい form conjugates like an い-adjective. You can use 〜たくない (don't want to), 〜たかった (wanted to), etc.

Negative: Don't Want To

To say you don't want to do something, change たい to .

Examples
Kyou wa dekaketakunai desu. I don't want to go out today.
Yasai o tabetakunai desu. I don't want to eat vegetables.

Expressing "Want Something": ほしい

To express wanting an object (not an action), use (hoshii). The object is marked with が.

Pattern

Examples
Atarashii kuruma ga hoshii desu. I want a new car.
Koohii ga hoshii desu. I want coffee.
Nani ga hoshii desu ka. What do you want?

Talking About Others' Desires

In Japanese, you cannot directly state what someone else wants. Use or instead.

Examples
Tanaka-san wa atarashii pasokon o hoshigatteimasu. Tanaka wants a new computer (shows signs of wanting).
Kodomo wa asobi ni ikitagatteimasu. The child wants to go play.
