Comparisons

Learn to compare things using より, の方が, and express superlatives with 一番.

より (than) の方が (comparing) 一番 (most/best) どちら (which one)

Basic Comparison: より

(yori) means "than" and is used to compare two things.

Pattern
[A] は [B] より [adjective] です
"A is more [adj] than B"
Examples
Toukyou wa Oosaka yori ookii desu. Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.
Natsu wa fuyu yori atsui desu. Summer is hotter than winter.
Nihongo wa eigo yori muzukashii desu. Japanese is more difficult than English.

の方が for Emphasis

(no hou ga) emphasizes which one has more of the quality.

Pattern
[A] の方が [B] より [adjective] です
"A is more [adj] than B" (emphasizing A)
Examples
Niku no hou ga sakana yori suki desu. I like meat more than fish.
Densha no hou ga basu yori hayai desu. Trains are faster than buses.
Tip

You can omit より[B] if the comparison is obvious from context: 肉の方が好きです (I prefer meat).

Asking Which One: どちら

Use (dochira) to ask which of two options.

Pattern
[A] と [B] と どちらが [adjective] ですか
"Which is more [adj], A or B?"
Examples
Koohii to koucha to dochira ga suki desu ka. Which do you like better, coffee or tea?
Eiga to ongaku to dochira ga suki desu ka. Which do you like better, movies or music?
Answering
Koohii no hou ga suki desu. I like coffee better.
Dochira mo suki desu. I like both.

Superlative: 一番

(ichiban) means "most" or "number one" and creates superlatives.

Pattern
[group] の中で [A] が 一番 [adjective] です
"Among [group], A is the most [adj]"
Examples
Nihon de ichiban takai yama wa Fujisan desu. The tallest mountain in Japan is Mt. Fuji.
Kurasu de dare ga ichiban jouzu desu ka. Who is the best in the class?
Kono mise de nani ga ichiban oishii desu ka. What's the most delicious thing at this restaurant?

Asking "Which is Best?"

For three or more options, use (dore) or question words with 一番.

Examples
Kisetsu no naka de nani ga ichiban suki desu ka. Which season do you like the most?
Haru ga ichiban suki desu. I like spring the most.
Kono naka de dore ga ichiban yasui desu ka. Which one is the cheapest among these?

Same Level: 同じぐらい

To say two things are about the same, use (onaji gurai).

Examples
Toukyou to Oosaka wa onaji gurai atsui desu. Tokyo and Osaka are about equally hot.
Kono futatsu wa onaji gurai no nedan desu. These two are about the same price.
