Learn to list multiple actions with 〜たり and express time relationships with 〜前に.

Listing Actions: 〜たり〜たりする

Use to list examples of actions, implying there are other similar actions not mentioned. It's like saying "do things like X and Y".

Pattern
Verb (た form) + り, Verb (た form) + り + する
Do things like [verb1] and [verb2]
Examples
Shuumatsu wa eiga o mitari, kaimono o shitari shimasu. On weekends, I do things like watch movies and go shopping.
Kinou wa hon o yondari, ongaku o kiitari shimashita. Yesterday I did things like read books and listen to music.
Yasumi no hi wa nani o shitari shimasu ka. What kind of things do you do on your days off?
Note

The た form is the plain past tense. For verbs: 食べる→食べた, 行く→行った, する→した, 来る→来た.

Before Doing: 〜前に

Use (mae ni) after the dictionary form of a verb to express "before doing".

Verb (dictionary) + 前に
Before [verb]-ing
Examples
Neru mae ni, ha o migakimasu. Before sleeping, I brush my teeth.
Taberu mae ni, "itadakimasu" to iimasu. Before eating, I say "itadakimasu".
Nihon ni kuru mae ni, nihongo o benkyou shimashita. Before coming to Japan, I studied Japanese.

After Doing: 〜後で

Use (ato de) after the た form of a verb to express "after doing".

Pattern
Verb (た form) + 後で
After [verb]-ing
Examples
Tabeta ato de, sanpo shimasu. After eating, I take a walk.
Eiga o mita ato de, kafe ni ikimashita. After watching the movie, I went to a café.
Shigoto ga owatta ato de, nomi ni ikimasen ka. After work finishes, shall we go for drinks?

Note the difference in verb forms used with each expression.
