Quotations and Thoughts

〜と思います (I think) 〜と言います (to say) Quotation particle と Expressing opinions

The Quotation Particle: と

The particle marks quotations - what someone thinks, says, or what something is called. The quoted content comes before と and uses plain form.

Pattern
[Plain form sentence] + と + 思います/言います
I think/say that [sentence]

Expressing Thoughts: 〜と思います

Use (to omoimasu) to express your thoughts or opinions.

Examples
Ashita wa ame ga furu to omoimasu. I think it will rain tomorrow.
Nihongo wa muzukashii to omoimasu. I think Japanese is difficult.
Kare wa konai to omoimasu. I think he won't come.
Important

Use plain form before と思います. Say 雨が降る (not 雨が降ります) before と思います.

Reporting Speech: 〜と言います

Use (to iimasu) to quote what someone says or said.

Examples
Tanaka-san wa "ikitakunai" to iimashita. Tanaka said "I don't want to go".
Sensei wa ashita tesuto ga aru to iimashita. The teacher said there's a test tomorrow.
"Arigatou" wa eigo de nan to iimasu ka. How do you say "arigatou" in English?

Asking for Opinions

To ask what someone thinks:

Examples
Dou omoimasu ka. What do you think?
Kono eiga ni tsuite dou omoimasu ka. What do you think about this movie?

Names and Meanings: 〜という

Use to explain what something is called or means.

Examples
Kore wa "sushi" to iu tabemono desu. This is a food called "sushi".
"Ai" to iu kanji o shitte imasu ka. Do you know the kanji called "ai"?
