Existence and Location

Learn to describe where things and people are using あります, います, and location words.

Two Verbs for Existence

Japanese uses different verbs depending on whether the subject is animate (living) or inanimate (non-living).

Verb Used For Examples
Inanimate objects本、机、建物
Animate beings人、犬、魚
Note

Plants use あります. Robots and vehicles typically use あります, but can use います in stories where they have personalities.

Stating Existence

To simply say something exists:

Pattern
[thing/person] が あります/います
[thing/person] ga arimasu/imasu
Examples
Konbini ga arimasu. There is a convenience store.
Neko ga imasu. There is a cat.

Location + に + あります/います

To say where something/someone is located:

Pattern
[place] に [thing/person] が あります/います
[place] ni [thing/person] ga arimasu/imasu
Examples
Tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu. There is a book on the desk.
Kouen ni kodomo ga imasu. There are children in the park.
Eki no mae ni basutei ga arimasu. There is a bus stop in front of the station.

Using Location Words
Isu no shita ni neko ga imasu. There is a cat under the chair.
Ginkou no tonari ni yuubinkyoku ga arimasu. There is a post office next to the bank.

Asking "Where?"

Use (doko) to ask where something is.

Pattern
[thing] は どこ に ありますか/いますか
[thing] wa doko ni arimasu ka/imasu ka
Examples
Toire wa doko ni arimasu ka. Where is the restroom?
Yamada-san wa doko ni imasu ka. Where is Mr. Yamada?
