The 〜たら Conditional

The form expresses "if" or "when" conditions. It's one of the most common conditional forms in Japanese.

Pattern
Verb (た form) + ら
If/When [verb]
Type Dictionary た form 〜たら
う verb 行く 行った 行ったら
る verb 食べる 食べた 食べたら
Irregular する した したら
Irregular 来る 来た (きた) 来たら (きたら)

Using 〜たら for "If"

Examples
Ame ga futtara, ie ni imasu. If it rains, I'll stay home.
Yasukattara, kaimasu. If it's cheap, I'll buy it.
Jikan ga attara, asobi ni kite kudasai. If you have time, please come visit.

Using 〜たら for "When"

〜たら can also mean "when" for events expected to happen:

Examples
Ie ni kaettara, denwa shimasu. When I get home, I'll call you.
Eki ni tsuitara, renraku shite kudasai. When you arrive at the station, please contact me.

〜たら with Adjectives and Nouns

Type Formation Example
い-adj 〜い → 〜かったら 高い → 高かったら
な-adj 〜だったら 静か → 静かだったら
Noun 〜だったら 雨 → 雨だったら
Examples
Hima dattara, tetsudatte kudasai. If you're free, please help me.
Oishikattara, motto tabete kudasai. If it's delicious, please eat more.

Giving Advice with 〜たら

Combined with どうですか or いいですよ, 〜たら is used for suggestions:

Examples
Isha ni ittara dou desu ka. How about going to the doctor?
Yasundara ii desu yo. You should rest.
