Actions and Invitations

Learn transitive verbs with を particle, and how to make invitations and suggestions in Japanese.

を particle Transitive verbs ~ませんか (invitation) ~ましょう (let's)

The Object Particle: を

The particle (wo, pronounced "o") marks the direct object of an action - the thing that receives the action of a transitive verb.

Pattern
[object] を [transitive verb]
[object] wo [verb]
Examples
Asagohan wo tabemasu. I eat breakfast.
Mizu wo nomimasu. I drink water.
Hon wo yomimasu. I read a book.

Common Transitive Verbs

Transitive verbs require an object - they describe actions done to something.

Verb Reading Meaning
tabemasuto eat
nomimasuto drink
mimasuto see/watch
kikimasuto listen/hear
yomimasuto read
kakimasuto write
kaimasuto buy
torimasuto take (photos)

Location of Action: で

Use to indicate where an action takes place.

Pattern
[place] で [object] を [verb]
[place] de [object] wo [verb]
Examples
Resutoran de hirugohan wo tabemasu. I eat lunch at a restaurant.
Toshokan de hon wo yomimasu. I read books at the library.
Suupaa de yasai wo kaimasu. I buy vegetables at the supermarket.

Making Invitations: ~ませんか

To invite someone to do something together, change the verb ending to .

Pattern
[verb stem] + ませんか
"Won't you...?" / "Would you like to...?"
Invitation Examples
Issho ni hirugohan wo tabemasen ka. Would you like to have lunch together?
Eiga wo mimasen ka. Would you like to watch a movie?
Koohii wo nomimasen ka. Would you like to have some coffee?

Suggestions: ~ましょう

To suggest doing something together ("Let's..."), use .

Pattern
[verb stem] + ましょう
"Let's [verb]"
Suggestion Examples
Ikimashou. Let's go.
Yasumimashou. Let's take a break.
Issho ni benkyou shimashou. Let's study together.
~ませんか vs ~ましょう

is a polite invitation (asking). is more direct (suggesting/deciding). Use ませんか when inviting someone for the first time.

Responding to Invitations

Accepting
Ee, ii desu ne. Yes, that sounds good.
Zehi. By all means. / I'd love to.
Declining Politely
Sumimasen, chotto... Sorry, it's a bit... (difficult)
Kyou wa chotto youji ga arimasu. I have something to do today.
