Japan Student Visa Guide: Requirements, Process & Tips

What is the Japan Student Visa?

The Japan Student Visa (officially called "College Student" status of residence) allows foreign nationals to study at Japanese educational institutions for extended periods. If you plan to study in Japan for more than 90 days, you'll need this visa.

This visa covers enrollment at:

  • Universities and graduate schools
  • Junior colleges and colleges of technology
  • Specialized training colleges (senmon gakko)
  • Japanese language schools approved by the Ministry of Justice

The Two-Step Application Process

Unlike many countries, Japan uses a unique two-step visa system:

Step 1: Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

Your school in Japan applies to the Immigration Services Agency on your behalf. This document proves you meet the requirements for the student status.

Step 2: Visa Application

Once you receive your COE, you apply for the actual visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country.

Requirements

  • Acceptance letter from a Japanese educational institution recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEXT)
  • Financial proof demonstrating you can cover tuition and living expenses (generally 1.5 to 2.5 million yen in addition to tuition)
  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity
  • Educational documents including transcripts and graduation certificates
  • Language ability sufficient for your chosen program

Period of Stay

The student visa allows stays of up to 4 years and 3 months, determined by the Minister of Justice based on your program length.

Working While Studying

Student visa holders can work part-time (up to 28 hours per week during school terms, 40 hours during vacations) with a "Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted" permit.
