What is Permanent Residency?
Permanent Residency (PR) in Japan allows you to live indefinitely without visa renewals and work in any field without restrictions. It's the most stable immigration status available (short of citizenship).
Standard Requirements (10-Year Rule)
The general requirement is:
- 10 consecutive years of residence in Japan
- Including at least 5 consecutive years under an eligible work-based or status-based visa
Note: Time under Technical Intern Training and Specified Skilled Worker (i) does NOT count toward the 5-year work requirement.
Three Core Principles
Immigration assesses three main criteria:
- Good conduct: Your behavior and conduct are proper
- Financial stability: Sufficient assets or skills for independent living
- Conformity to Japan's interests: Proper fulfillment of tax payments, pension, health insurance, and immigration notifications
