Group 1: Godan Verbs

Verbs ending in an u-row sound. The stem changes based on the conjugation form.

Endings

うくぐすつぬぶむる

Examples

飲む (nomu) to drink

書く (kaku) to write

話す (hanasu) to speak

Conjugation Pattern

Masu-form う row → い row + ます飲む → 飲みます

Nai-form う row → あ row + ない飲む → 飲まない

Group 2: Ichidan Verbs

Verbs ending in える or いる. Simply drop る and add the suffix.

Endings

えるいる

Examples

食べる (taberu) to eat

見る (miru) to see

寝る (neru) to sleep

Conjugation Pattern

Masu-form る → ます食べる → 食べます

Te-form る → て食べる → 食べて

Nai-form る → ない食べる → 食べない

Irregular Verbs

Only two verbs: する (to do) and 来る (to come). Must be memorized.

する (suru) - to do

Nai しない

Potential できる

来る (kuru) - to come

Dictionary 来る (くる)

Masu 来ます (きます)

Te 来て (きて)

Nai 来ない (こない)

Note: The reading of 来る changes depending on the conjugation!

Te-form Rules

The te-form is used for requests, connecting actions, and forming the progressive.

Group 1 (Godan)

う, つ, る → って買う → 買って

む, ぶ, ぬ → んで飲む → 飲んで

く → いて書く → 書いて

ぐ → いで泳ぐ → 泳いで

す → して話す → 話して

⚠️ Exception: 行く → 行って (not 行いて)

Group 2 (Ichidan)

る → て食べる → 食べて

Simple! Just drop る and add て.

Irregular

する → して

来る → 来て (きて)
